The Clinical Impact of Blood Glucose Monitoring System
Accuracy in Critically Ill Patients
Clinical, Regulatory, and Practical Factors
A clinician’s treatment of critically ill patients can be undermined by inaccurate point-of-care (POC) glucose meter results. Inaccurate results are most often caused by interferences related to patient physiology and exogenous substances like medications, therapeutics, and non-glucose sugars. Inaccurate glucose results put patients at risk for improper insulin dosing and missed hypoglycemic events, and have caused adverse events and even death.
Using peer-reviewed evaluations and case studies, our seminar examines the risks posed by interferences and sample selection to glucose meter accuracy, and how important accuracy is for the safety and outcomes of all hospitalized patients and especially critically ill patients.
